You may be experiencing an increase in tooth grinding or jaw clenching during this stressful time. This can cause headaches, pain around your face or jaw joints, limited range of jaw opening or difficulty chewing. Grinding and clenching can also cause you to crack fillings and teeth. Try to practice daily mindfulness during this time to help cope with the added stress. If you are having any symptoms of jaw pain, you should contact your dentist right away. If your dentist determines that you may be experiencing jaw joint or muscle strain due to excessive grinding and clenching, they may recommend some or all of the following to you: - Use anti-inflammatories or pain killers - Apply a warm or cold compress in the area of the tender muscles or joints - Avoid any hard or chewy foods - Chew evenly on both sides - Avoid grinding and clenching where possible - Avoid opening your mouth too wide - Avoid allowing your teeth to touch on resting - Do specific exercises to relax your jaw muscles and reduce tension If these measures do not improve your jaw pain, you should contact your dentist again. You may be asked to come in for a more thorough evaluation and diagnosis. Splint therapy may be initiated to treat and help with diagnosis. Stay healthy and will see you soon!
